A Key Lever for Change

ISA provides coaching in the following areas, leadership-school development, content area (literacy, math, science, social studies) counseling, advisory, ELL, and special education.

ISA school leadership-school development coaching provides principals and leadership team members support to: establish school development goals/outcomes and priorities; develop and implement a strategic plan designed to achieve the goals; use multiple sources of data (e.g., attendance rates, student achievement data, walk-throughs, ISA implementation tools) to monitor the the implementation plan and make adjustments based on data and feedback; and align supervision and evaluation with the goals. The leadership coach works with the principal to implement the ISA model so that the school owns it and reclaims its sense of agency—the belief that achieving success lies within the members of the school community and that they have the capacity to be the change that is needed. The coach supports the principal and leadership team to identify and develop the organizational, structural, and school-wide policy and practice changes needed to support teachers in the implementation of the pedagogical practices needed to achieve the outcomes.  The leadership coach may collaborate with the principal on developing and leading effective meetings, use of time to focus on instruction, analysis and use of data and feedback to inform decisions, and communication with staff and community.

Content-Area Coaching. ISA content coaches provide individual teacher and team coaching in literacy, ELA, mathematics, science, and social studies to support the implementation of inquiry-based, standards-aligned, and college-preparatory instructional strategies. ISA content coaching includes: co-planning and co-developing inquiry-based, standards-aligned curriculum units, lessons, projects and curriculum-embedded performance tasks and assessments; differentiation; modeling instructional strategies that elicit high-order thinking and facilitate classroom discourse; observing teaching and learning and providing evidence-based, non-judgmental, actionable feedback for teacher improvement; locating and providing resources for teachers; supporting the use of data, including student work, to assess the effectiveness of instruction and inform instructional decisions.

Specialized Coaching. Coaches who work with ELL and special education teachers support them to co-plan with content area teachers and design and implement interventions that facilitate students’ achievement in their content area classes. ELL and special education coaches help teachers build their pedagogical knowledge and effectiveness through co-planning, observation and feedback, provision of resources, and modeling. Coaches supporting the implementation of advisory work with the leadership team as well as teachers in the organizational and curricular design and implementation of advisories.

ISA coaches help teams to develop strategies for using meetings productively (e.g., through agendas and decision minutes); implementing distributed counseling (e.g., personalization strategies to leverage increased student achievement and improved student behavior; case management protocols to address individual student issues; development and implementation of interventions to support student academic and behavioral improvement); using our evidence-based protocols to assess student work for demonstrations of inquiry-based, higher-order thinking and the state standards, and to develop strategies to improve student performance; sharing effective teaching strategies; and integrating the CCSS across the curriculum.

Counselor Coaching. ISA coaches provide support to counselors’ development of expertise in Distributed Counseling™ and the knowledge and skills needed for the implementation of distributed counseling (e.g., peer mediation or restorative justice programs, case management protocols, advisory curriculum, etc.). Coaches support the counselor in the development and implementation of a 9th-12th grade comprehensive, post-secondary information, access, and application program that includes student visits to college campuses, development of individual post-secondary plans, regular transcript reviews, family conferences on financing college and financial aid, support for completing application and financial forms, and preparing for interviews, etc.
