ISA’s Latest Case Study: Getting Students on Track and Graduating on Time at Marta Valle High School
New York City’s Marta Valle High School commenced its partnership with ISA during the 2015-16 school year. Over the course of its engagement with ISA, the school made great strides in keeping students on track to graduation as well as graduating students in 4 years at rates that surpassed those of matched comparison students and citywide averages. Welcome ISA’s Newest Team Member: Carolyne Quintana
Carolyne Quintana will serve as ISA’s senior director of programs for its social, emotional, and academic development (SEAD) portfolio. Prior to ISA, she served as principal of Bronxdale High School, which was featured in a 2019 report by the Learning Policy Institute, Teaching the Way Students Learn Best. In 2018, she was named to a leadership development role with the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) as a new principal support coach, coaching new principals across New York City, before becoming the executive director of NYCDOE’s Affinity Schools Citywide Office. The session will be led by ISA coach, Henri Shimojyo, who focuses on supporting effective science and mathematics instruction as a teacher supervisor with the Graduate School of Education at the University California, Riverside. Henri has over 15 years of school-related experience, including teaching all levels of high school science and leading district STEM initiatives. Henri also supports California’s implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards.

I recently read a book called Black Teachers on Teaching by Dr. Michele Foster. It was an amazingly descriptive account of the history of Black educators educating Black children, and it made me reflect on my own K-12 journey. These stories of Black teachers and their commitment through desegregation to ensure Black students didn’t receive less of an education than their peers was moving. Reading it, I realized that some of the most impactful teachers in my life have been Black educators. During my time in grades K-12, I’ve had a handful of Black teachers, and they are an important part of the group of teachers that I remember motivating and encouraging me.
