Dr. Jonathan Katz to Launch “Developing Mathematical Thinking: A Guide to Rethinking the Mathematics Classroom’”at Math Symposium, Tuesday, June 17th at 4:30pm
Carle Place, New York – June 5, 2014 – Meet Dr. Jonathan Katz for the launch of his new book, “Developing Mathematical Thinking: A Guide to Rethinking the Mathematics Classroom,” on Tuesday, June 17th from 4:30 – 7:00pm (ET) at the Institute for Student Achievement (ISA) Math Symposium at Teachers College, Columbia University 525 W. 120th St, New York, NY.
“I’m thrilled to release my book at ISA’s Math Symposium and to share my thoughts and experiences with this community,” said Dr. Jonathan Katz, author and senior math specialist at ISA. “The education system has done a poor job helping students witness the wonder and power of mathematics. Standards can be brought into the picture, but unless we think about what it means to truly engage students in mathematics, we will continue to be unsuccessful. I hope this book will help to change that,” Dr. Katz added.
“Developing Mathematical Thinking: A Guide to Rethinking the Mathematics Classroom” aims to change the way students experience math in middle and high school classrooms. The book provides a theoretical basis for this approach to teaching mathematics, multiple guides and questions for teachers to consider in relation to their everyday teaching, and over 30 examples of problems, lessons, tasks, and projects that been used effectively with urban students.
“In the spirit of inquiry, Katz leads the reader through a series of questions, investigations, and assessment tools that help educators, administration, students, and families finally make sense of mathematics. Decades of teaching and coaching experience are documented in this book. Katz gives life to mathematics through joyful and challenging learning experiences, not just lesson plans,” said Grace O’Keeffe of Hudson High School of Learning Technologies in New York, in a review.
