GLSEN, the leading national education organization focused on ensuring safe and affirming schools for all students, honored an ISA school, the Academy for Young Writers, and their Gender-Sexuality Alliance (GSA), along with George Stephanopoulos and others at the 13th Annual GLSEN Respect Awards on Monday, May 23, 2016 in New York City.
“It was an amazing evening, and the best part was that our students were treated like the real celebrities,” said Principal Courtney Winkfield. “Every person in attendance waited for a chance to get a photo with them. Deja, Daniel, Spencer, and Dio made their way through the night like old pros. Spencer and Michelle gave a beautiful speech accepting their award.” “This was a proud moment for our school community and I am grateful to every member of our staff. As Michelle said so beautifully last night, ‘Communities like ours have historically been plagued by low expectations, but tonight shows what is possible when you empower students.'” ISA supports diversity in our schools and encourages mutual respect among students and teachers. Congratulations to the AYW GSA on your well-deserved recognition! Click on any of the photographs for larger pictures. |
