Practice in creativity and problem solving is essential for those aspiring for meaningful work in a world that is rapidly changing.  Our students, especially those previously underserved, will face new challenges—personal, societal, and economic—demanding new ideas and tools to resolve them.  In today’s world of meaningful work, it is customary for teams of people to tackle issues together creatively, develop ideas, conduct research, and organize information in order to produce new products, services, or solutions.  This is the model we have in mind for Arts & Media Prep because we understand that education is an effective means toward a healthy mind, a satisfying life and belief in the possibilities for positive contribution to our world.

The mission of Arts & Media Prep, in partnership with the Institute for Student Achievement, is to offer a caring small-school environment that prepares students to be college ready, life-long independent learners, creative thinkers, and students confident in themselves and cooperative with others. Through a focus that utilizes problem solving, research, and the habits of mind, we will offer academically challenging standards-based curricula that will stimulate curiosity and encourage high expectations while providing support. Our focus on inquiry, literacy, the arts, science and technology will help students to think critically about their world and prepare them for life’s future challenges.  We value effort toward improvement, and we hope to assist all students to find their passion.

Queens High School of Teaching is an ISA partner school. The school is comprised of three small learning communities: Freire, Montessori, and Emerson.

Each student in the three small learning communities is known well by the peers and teachers of his community. There is a daily literacy program with an emphasis on self-selected reading, a student advisory program, and a Teaching Institute (see program description). District 75 students and all Special Education students are included in our mixed ability classes; there are no self-contained classes. The school is a state of the art facility with contemporary computer labs, a distance learning lab, science labs, a large theatre and an experimental black box theatre. We are part of a three-school 32-acre landscaped campus in eastern Queens.

We are a new college preparatory high school with a rigorous high school program designed for students who would like to have a career in teaching or related professions. Selected students do practical internships through the Teaching Institute where they get to work with teaching professionals in one of the three-campus schools. In place of Advanced Placement courses, students are offered college level courses at Queens College and Queensborough Community College.
