Lake Success, NY, April 6, 2006 – The Institute for Student Achievement (ISA) announced today its annual black-tie fundraising event, the ISA Galaxy Gala XIII, will be held Thursday, April 27, 2006 at 7 p.m. at the Garden City Hotel on Long Island. With the theme, “Opening Doors, Nurturing Dreams,” the event will bring together educators, benefactors and ISA students to celebrate student achievement and recognize honorees for their demonstrated commitment to ensuring that all youth receive an equitable, high-quality education.

ISA, a leading school redesign partner that facilitates the transformation of high schools into small learning communities and start-up of small schools designed to prepare all students for success in college, will present the following awards to this year’s honorees.

  • Community Service Award - Silda Wall Spitzer, founder of the Children for Children Foundation and wife of New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, for establishing youth volunteering and giving programs, with an emphasis on providing resources to underserved schools in New York City
  • Education Leadership Award - Dr. Edmund Gordon, professor emeritus and interim dean at Teachers College, Columbia University, for his scholarly contributions to education and psychology, with a focus on poverty, human diversity and school learning
  • Corporate Leadership Awards -
    • Michael Leeds, vice-chair of the ISA Board of Directors and president of FlightStar, Inc. and Andrea Leeds, co-director of the Andrea and Michael Leeds Family Foundation
    • Steven Alessandro, Chairman and CEO of SmartWall, Inc.

“We are delighted to honor these admirable leaders, whose everyday actions coincide with ISA’s mission to give students the power to succeed,” said Dr. Gerry House, ISA’s president and CEO. “This theme of this year’s Gala, ‘Opening Doors, Nurturing Dreams,’ vibrantly expresses ISA’s dedication to fostering the highest levels of academic, personal and social achievement for all students and ensuring that they are prepared for today’s high-tech, global economy.”

The evening will feature a cocktail hour, sit-down dinner, auction and raffle, with the goal of raising funds to support ISA’s ongoing efforts to improve the quality of education for at-risk and struggling students.

“Galaxy Gala XIII provides a wonderful opportunity for leading members of the community to show their support for ISA and its on-going efforts to help high school students succeed in college and beyond,” said Mr. Mark Hamer, President, Harvest Real Estate Services, Inc., and co-chair of Gala XIII.  “It is inspiring to see, first-hand, how ISA’s small schools and small learning communities are consistently raising the bar for education.”

Approximately 8,000 public school students participate in 31 small schools and small learning communities in school districts in New York, Georgia, New Jersey and Virginia. ISA recently partnered with Union City Board of Education in New Jersey to create eight new small learning communities, slated to open for the 2006-07 school year, and partnered with Atlanta Public Schools to design and open four small schools at the Carver Educational Complex, which opened in August 2005. Additionally, ISA was recently awarded its second and third grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, totaling $7,886,381. These grants support the creation of six new small high schools in New York City, four additional small high schools outside of New York City, and ISA’s work in transforming two large, under-performing New York City high schools into small learning communities.
