January 23, 2006 Gates Foundation Gives $7.9 Million to New York Education Institute
This article details the Institute for Student Achievement’s receipt of a $7.9 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to establish six small high schools in New York City for poorly performing students. The grant, to be awarded over five years, also will be used to convert two New York high schools into schools offering small learning communities, or a “school within- a-school”, in subjects such as science or the arts, said Dr. Gerry House, president and CEO of ISA. “The schools will prepare students for success in college and give them the necessary support to graduate from high school,” House said. The grant is the second the Institute has received in three years from the Gates Foundation. ISA also received $6 million in 2003 to set up 10 small high schools in the New York area. |
