Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Awards $8M to Long Island School Reformer

This feature article reports that the Institute for Student Achievement has won almost $8 million in grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to improve high schools with under-performing students in New York City and other areas. As part of the overall grant, ISA was awarded $4.5 million to create six small high schools and divide two large high schools into small learning communities in New York City. According to Dr. Gerry House, president and CEO of ISA, ISA creates “personalized learning environments” that offer academic and social support for students as well as training for teachers. “The structure is only one component,” House said. “The small school allows you to do certain things you wouldn’t be able to do in a school of 1,500 to 2,000 students.”
