November 18, 2005 Mayor Plans New Education Measures, Including Reshaping Eight Troubled High Schools
This in-depth article on Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s new initiative to improve New York City’s public high schools reports that the Institute for Student Achievement is one of the three nonprofit groups that have been selected to work with the city on the new high school programs. According to Dr. Gerry House, president and CEO of ISA, “reshaping big schools was difficult but not impossible. We wouldn’t be in it if we didn’t think it could work.” The Mayor’s plan, which includes a project to reshape eight large, struggling schools into small learning communities, will be funded by $24 million in private donations, $18.8 million of it from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. We’re moving on all fronts,” Schools Chancellor Joel Klein said. “No longer are we hoping for kids who will meet the needs of our school system. We are designing a school system that will meet the needs of our kids.” |
