October 20, 2005 Creating Academic Achievers
This local story covers a special presentation at Annandale High School, Virginia, that highlighted the success of the school’s small learning community — named the Student Achievement Model (SAM) — which was established in partnership with the Institute for Student Achievement. As part of the event, ISA presented U.S. Rep. Tom Davis (R-11th) with an award in appreciation of his efforts to procure funding for ISA-sponsored initiatives in the state. According to assistant principal Brandon Cooley, the initiative has shown signs of success. “Every year GPAs have gone up,” he said. “Many of the SAM students have also shown improvement both socially and emotionally.” At its core, the program SAM is a college preparatory program that offers opportunities for career and college exploration. “Every one of our 35 seniors is looking at colleges,” Cooley said. |
