Lilo J. Leeds

Co-Founder of ISA, the Schott Foundation, Great Neck/Manhasset Community Child Care Partnership, and the Alliance for Excellent Education

Lilo Leeds, along with her husband Gerard, is co-founder of the Institute for Student Achievement, Inc. and is a member of its Board of Directors.

In 1971, the Leedses founded CMP Media Inc., a leading publisher of high technology-oriented trade magazines and newspapers, with revenues of approximately $500 million. It was frequently cited as one of the best companies to work for in America. CMP, subsequently managed by the next Leeds generation, was sold to United News and Media in June 1999.

Lilo Leeds always has been involved in issues supportive of women and children, including increasing the availability of universal and quality child care, equity for women and girls, and improving education for all children. With the Child Care Council's help, she created the first on-site corporate child care and infant care center on Long Island, located at CMP. She also started an after-school, on-site center and a summer day camp for CMP employees' school-age children. Recently, Lilo and her husband were among the 10 honorees selected by WCBS-TV for recognition in its annual "Fulfilling the Dream" celebration of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Their volunteer contributions and the positive impact they have had on the quality of life of others were cited in the special broadcast.

Lilo Leeds is involved in numerous organizations and has consistently been honored for her civic responsibility. She is a member of the Board of the Child Care Council of Nassau County, and the Great Neck/Manhasset Community Child Care Partnership, and serves on the advisory board of the Arnold and Joan Saltzman/Hofstra Child Care Center. In addition, she serves as an associate trustee of North Shore University Hospital, and is a Board member of North Shore Child & Family Guidance.

A long-time resident of Long Island, Lilo Leeds has five grown children. She was a refugee from Hitler's Germany and came to the United States in 1939. She holds a BS degree in mathematics from Queens College, and an MA degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She received an honorary doctorate from Stony Brook in May 1996, and an honorary doctorate from Queens College in 1998.
